Speeding and Crashes

September 1, 2015 By Staff - s.r. Leave a Comment

SpeedingPeople don’t think of speeding as being the cause or a contributing factor in motor vehicle collisions because it’s so common. We all catch ourselves speeding at one time or another, but speeding can be deadly. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, speeding contributes to about 33 percent of all motor vehicle accidents. The faster a vehicle is traveling, the less reaction time is available. There’s also the increased energy thrust on the human body at high speeds. The likelihood of serious injury increases exponentially the faster we travel. In 1995, congress repealed the national 55 mile per hour interstate highway speed limit. Deaths on interstates immediately increased by fifteen percent. Death rates on other roadways where speed limits were not raised remained unchanged. Yes, there are reasons for speed limits and traffic enforcement. If you have been involved in a motor vehicle speeding accident, contact the personal injury lawyers at Springer & Lyle.
You don’t have to be going over the speed limit to be speeding. A driver can also be speeding when they’re driving too fast for weather conditions. This can occur on snow and/or icy conditions, wet roads or when there’s decreased visibility. Speeding can also involve driving too fast for traffic conditions, especially when a motorist is tailgating. A driver traveling too fast for conditions puts themselves, their passengers and anybody else nearby at increased risk.
Speeding can cause very serious personal injuries or death. Injuries from speed related accidents include neck and traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, fractures and sprains. Thousands of speed related injuries result in permanent disability and/or disfigurement every year, while thousands of lives are also lost. Individuals and families must live with the sad daily reminders of these injuries and deaths.
As one of the premier personal injury law firms in north Texas, we at Springer & Lyle want people to be aware that speeding saves very little time, but significantly increases the danger of an accident where you, your passengers, or innocent people on or near the roadway can get seriously injured or killed.
